About Us

At Helping Hands for the Homeless, our mission is rooted in compassion and community. We are committed to ensuring that every individual is treated with respect, cared for with compassion, and supported with kindness. While homelessness is a complex issue that requires long-term solutions, we believe that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day. Helping Hands for the Homeless emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. That’s why we focus on one simple, yet impactful initiative: creating and delivering care packages for individuals experiencing homelessness in Vancouver.

Our Story

As a nurse working in the emergency department, I have cared for many individuals experiencing homelessness. Time and again, I’ve witnessed how the lack of basic necessities (e.g., warm clothing, food, and toiletries) can complicate not only daily life but also health outcomes. Many of the patients I met were facing serious medical concerns while also struggling without the essentials that so many of us take for granted.

These experiences deeply moved me and inspired me to take action beyond the hospital walls. I started Helping Hands for the Homeless as a personal initiative to provide care packages filled with practical items that bring warmth and comfort. Each package is assembled with intention and includes essentials such as blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, toiletries...etc.

Helping Hands for the Homeless began with one nurse’s desire to make a difference, but it’s also a call to community. Together, we can make a difference, one package at a time.

The Care Packages

Each care package is thoughtfully prepared with both practical necessities and small comforts. Items include:

  • Warmth and Protection: blankets, hats, gloves, and scarves to help face cold weather.

  • Clothing Essentials: Socks, sweaters, sweatpants and other clothing items for warmth and comfort

  • Basic Toiletries: soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other essentials for personal hygiene.

  • Nourishment: granola bars and other non-perishable snacks to provide quick energy and nutrition.

Where We Have Donated

Our care packages have been donated to two local organizations that play a vital role in supporting vulnerable populations:

  • Salvation Army Belkin House, which provides shelter, meals, and rehabilitation programs.

  • Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, a safe and welcoming space offering meals, support, and advocacy for women in need.

  • Mission Impossible, a community organization in Vancouver that empowers individuals facing poverty and homelessness through employment training, mentorship, and supportive community programs.

By partnering with these organizations, we ensure that the care packages reach individuals who will benefit most, while also complementing the broader supports already in place.
